Body Count is the twenty-fourth episode in season one finale of CSI: Miami.
The trouble begins when an inmate is stabbed to death in the prison yard. Shortly after Horatio arrives on the scene, a helicopter appears above the correctional facility. He immediately fears that the murder was a decoy to set up an escape. That's confirmed as three prisoners hop aboard the chopper and flee. As the investigation gets underway, the identities of the fugitives become known and a horrible realization sweeps over Horatio: Two of the escapees are cold-blooded killers who already have their next victims picked out.
In the prison, an inmate is stabbed to death, with a handmade knife out of a toothbrush. Horatio appears on the scene to investigate; however, when he checks the inmates kept on their knees, he notices a police helicopter approaching, despite the place being on airlock. Inmates appear and jump in the heli, and despite the vehicle being shot at by the guards, they make a run for it.
After the fleeing, the prison gets everyone listed. A guard notes that an inmate doesn't wear the bracelet that belongs to him; instead, it is registered to Hank Kerner, who is a three times murderer awaiting trial, likely facing the death penalty. Soon, patrol finds the escaping helicopter: the pilot and one of the escapees, Randall Kaye, a stock broker convicted for hit and run is gunned down. Kerner, and the yet unknown third escapee is out of sight. Later, Speedle and Delko has the cell of the escapists investigated, where they find out that they carved out the WC with a spark plug, and that the inmates escaped through a maintenance tunnel leading to the landing point. They also find traces of needlework, and some family photos of Kaye.
Another murder occurs, as Kerner shoots a young woman for her car. It occured at an intersection fitted with a traffic monitoring camera, which reveals the dark truth: the third escapee is Stewart Otis, a notorious child molester who was put behind bars by Horatio earlier (episode 106, "Broken"). After the autopsy of the woman, Calleigh meets up with the prosecutor handling the Kerner case: she has her concerns about the crown witness, but is assured that she is under constant witness protection.
Horatio, Speed and Eric are having a brainstorming session about the evidences found in the cell; they realize that Otis is going for Randall Kaye's daughter Emma, and he was forging a uniform of the Catholic school she is attending. They rush the place, but she is already kidnapped by Otis, unnoticed. Who appears though, is Kaye's wife, who is visibly faking her concerns about not finding her. She is asked further by Horatio and Yelina: turns out she was the outsider mastermind behind the great escape, wanting to see her family together and her daughter to have a father for her while growing up. What she didn't counted on though was that his partner in escaping was going for Emma. Breaking down, she is convinced by Horatio to give Emma's clothes for K-9 search.
In the lab, Calleigh is investigating the bullets, joined by Hagen. He gets a phone call and gets disrupted; turns out that Kerner, not being able to reach the protected witness, murdered the prosecutor. Visiting the crime scene, Hagen wants to let Calleigh out loose from the case, concerning her safety, but she refuses to do so. Meanwhile, the canine search is successful to an extent, as they're able to locate Emma's smell even after they entered a cab. Turns out, Otis followed his original routine, and cut his victim's hair while giving boys' clothes to her. Meanwhile, Hagen tracks down a pimp whose prostitute was visited by Kerner. He left the girl without paying her, but he left a message painted on the wall: "31", standing for Homicide, which means he is declaredly after Calleigh.
Mrs. Kaye is interrogated at the MDPD, with her still being reluctant to give informations, but tells that his husband's crime partner wanted an RV as a part of the deal. They go after recent RV rentals, finding Simon Bishop, a soccer coach, Otis' partner and the RV's renter. They find pictures of Emma taken by Otis. Calleigh analyzes in the lab that the message for her was written with an old type of gun lubricant. Hagen wants Calleigh under his constant scrutiny; however as it turns out, it's not out of concern towards her, instead he doesn't want to lose another partner after Raymond, to be regarded as an unsafe cop to be partnered with.
Delko, using image enhancement and GIS comparison, both ties Simon to the RV with Emma, and the location to the Orange Bowl parking lot. Turns out that the RV's septic tank is leaking, leading the team to the RV. However, they're outplayed: inside, there's only a video of Otis and Emma playing. Yelina found shovel drag marks around the van, meaning Otis wanted to bury the girl; a manhunt starts in the bushes, during which Horatio finds a wounded, unconscious, but living Emma.
While Hagen falls asleep, Calleigh goes after the brand of gun lubricant from the wall sign to a gun store. She and Kerner notice each other, but after a brief sneaking hunt after one another, Calleigh outsmarts the fugitive. Although he first wants to turn and shoot, and then tells the CSI that he has nothing to lose by likely going into the chair for what he did, Calleigh convinces him to drop the gun, also teasing him with turning his pistol 90 degrees, the same way he murdered the young mother for her car before. At the MDPD, a cuffed Kerner threatens Calleigh that "this ain't over"; she responds that it doesn't matter if he gets her, someone other will make him pay for his undeniable crimes.
In the interrogation room, Horatio talks with Emma. Horatio makes a shocking discovery: Otis is going for Robyn, Emma's cousin too, who is on a field trip to an aquaticum. Otis, while acting around the children in the place's uniform, notices both Horatio and Yelina. He grabs Robyn by force and makes a run for the top floor. Having nowhere to go, he is held at gunpoint by Horatio, but threatens to kill Robyn. After a brief conversation, he wants to throw the girl out, but Horatio shoots him on the shoulder. He clears Robyn from the premises, and wants to grab back Otis, who is hinging on the balcony with one hand. While reaching for him, Otis cuts Horatio's hand twice before he is pulled up. Otis first cries under Horatio's arms for not letting him die, but after his apprehension, he instead tells that his nature will get him out again, for which Horatio replies that he'll wait outside, which is his nature. Yelina cleans Horatio's stab wound, after which the episode ends in the two saying their goodbyes.
