CASt (short for Capture, Afflict, Strangle) is a serial killer in the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation novel Binding Ties.

Background[]

CASt killed a total of five people a few years prior to Binding Ties. He often taunted the Las Vegas Police Department in the newspapers.

Modus Operandi[]

Every murder CASt committed had the same M.O.. He targeted middle-aged, heavy, Caucasian males and killed them by strangling them with a rope tied with a figure-eight knot. Before strangling the victim to death, CASt cuts the victim's right index finger off while he was still alive. After each murder, CASt would rearrange the body. Stomach-down, right finger severed, the other hand tucked under his stomach, rope still around the neck and a pool of poured semen around the buttocks.

Copycat[]

In the novel, a copycat began a killing spree in the same way CASt did, except the copycat killer severed the index finger after the victim was deceased. CASt severed the finger premortem. The CSIs noticed this by the lack of sprayed blood around the crime scenes during the copycat killings. The murder of Enrique Diaz had another feature that CASt did not do. In Diaz's left hand was a magnetic strip card, with the words "Property of Las Vegas Banner" printed on it.

    • November: Todd Henry
    • December: John Jarvis

Trivia[]

  • The killer appears inspired by real life serial killer Dennis Rader, better known as "Bind, Torture, Kill" or "BTK" for short. Rader killed 10 people for decades and taunted police with messages before disappearing for a decade. After returning by sending messages saying he was ready to kill again, Rader was identified through familial DNA and arrested.
