Erica Sykes is an aggressive, ambitious young news reporter for Miami's CBS station WFOR-TV. She is portrayed by Amy Laughlin.
Her antics are often described as crazy by the CSI team and they generally find her annoying, especially Ryan Wolfe (apparently, she once dated him just to get information out of him). It is implied that CSI Boa Vista was jealous of Ryan and Erica's "closeness". She says she is a journalist who only cares about her story but she has repeatedly put the lives of others in danger by revealing sensitive information and tried to ruin innocent people by creating a scandal to boost publicity.
She targeted Ryan and would frequently broadcast him at close range, much to his annoyance. But in the end, the team uses her tapes to find their suspect (episode 401, "From the Grave ").
In the season 4 episode "Free Fall", Ryan warned her to stay away from two former prisoners after he suspected that they are targets for murder. She refused to listen and got shot in the process. It is Erica who revealed to Ryan that there was a mole in the lab in a special extended scene after the episode "Urban Hellraisers" aired.
She also helps Ryan in a case regarding abuse of eminent domain, with the government evicting people from their homes before turning the land over to a private developer (episode 505, "Death Eminent").
In a later episode, however, she puts the life of Natalia's sister at risk by mentioning on the air that she is a victim in a kidnapping. Doing so created a connection between Natalia's sister and law enforcement, and Natalia feared the killer would get spooked and kill her sister. This did not happen, luckily (episode 508, "Darkroom").
A bottle girl is found supposedly murdered by a rising football star, Brady Jensen, and once Jensen's name is cleared by CSI, she stops him in front of their lab for a surprise interview. She presents him with a photo she bought that shows his arm on the dead girl in an attempt to create a scandal. She asks what his fans will think about Jensen. Jensen tells the camera that the thoughts of the viewers (and any fans he has left) should be on the murdered girl and her family before they "waste time looking at a photo Erica bought with blood money." He then tells Sykes "you're not a journalist, you're a jackal" and walks off. Sykes is left speechless. (episode 902 "Sudden Death")
