He and Calleigh dated while they were in the Academy, much to Eric Delko's displeasure.
Jake Berkeley is an undercover ATF agent whose partner Ken McCarthy, aka Billy Gault, has been murdered by one of the gang members from the Crypt Kings, the gang they've been infiltrating. Jake is originally the prime suspect when his gun is found in the Corner Shot, a gun housing developed by the Israelis which allows the shooter to aim and shoot around corners, which was used to kill him. Later, it is discovered that he is being set up by the real killer.
At the end of season five and in season six, they had again begun a relationship but new Department regulations involving officer fraternization and pressure from Rick Stetler caused Berkeley to break things off.
Jake is working again with ATF but gives up his cover in order to help Calleigh with her case. He asks her if she will wait for him but she responds that it would be to hard to wonder if he is okay all the time.
He resumed his undercover duty in season eight, tracking a gang of diamond thieves.
