No Good Deed is the fifteenth episode in Season Ten of CSI: Miami.

Synopsis

A by-the-book accountant is killed after being run over in the ocean by a motorboat, and the team soon discovers that he made a lot of enemies by exposing their illegal activities.

Plot

Henry Duncan, an accountant, has just finished surfing and is returning to the Beach. As he is about to reach it, he is attacked by a shark from below and his board overturns. He calls out for help from an oncoming speedboat, but the boat drives over him, twice. When Henry's body is washed up, Tom states the injuries were no accident. He was attacked on his stomach first as he was trying to swim away and then he was attacked on his neck, with it being cleaved by the propeller, so his head barely hung off. Horatio says it was murder and they're looking for the boat, the boat was the murder weapon.

Eric arrives when the boat is found and Horatio points to the presence of human flesh on the propeller. The owner, Dylan Perez, turns up and says he left the keys in his boat when drunk the previous night and reported it missing this morning. Eric finds grease on the steering, which Dylan knows wasn't there that night. This grease is used in cars and trucks, not boats.

Calleigh and Eric arrive at Henry's house to break the news to his son Sean. He is a speed racer, and he was heard to argue with his father. Henry was a stickler for rules and didn't want Sean to cheat in a race. Sean directs them to their neighbor, Connie Jaden, who tried to poison their dog with chocolate. When they arrive at her house, Eric notices the chocolate wrappers in the bin and she tells them she wouldn't hurt Henry as he was sweet, but she had enough of the dog barking. Connie is also a prostitute, which she is arrested for along with animal abuse, but only after she tells them that she has an alibi, Henry's colleague Will Kingsley.

Ryan meets with Will, who tells him that Henry was good at his job and he was working on something that badly affected him. Will says they should talk to their boss, Jane Caldicott, and also tells them that they never throw anything away, so they have a lot of files to check through.

Calleigh goes to Henry's house again and finds a bag, which contains his shoes covered with green paint. Ryan and Samantha analyze the files and Ryan suggests instead of going through each file, they should see which one has most of Henry's fingerprints on it. They narrow it down to one file, both Henry and Caldicott's prints are on the folder, but only Caldicott's are on the paper inside the folder, so she's been replacing papers. Samantha analyzes the paint to find it has a compound of copper, chromium and arsenic.

At the construction site where the paint came from, the owner Bob Scherner tells them to leave, but Samantha has a search warrant enabling them to collect soil samples. She collects a sample, and it has the same substances found in the paint. The same toxic substances are bubbling as liquid under the ground. Scherner calls in his lawyer who tells him not to answer questions, so the CSIs set their sights on Caldicott. Scherner bought land cheaply and then sold the houses for a premium. Caldicott denies all this, but reveals she was about to make a deal with Scherner and thus the paperwork in the file was altered. Henry found out, but she claims she would have bribed him, something Henry would've easily refused.

Walter and Tripp bring in Henry's car and they hear a phone ring. The phone is Henry's, and he has a voice message from a boy named Manuel, claiming he's been kidnapped. All surveillance videos are checked by Dave. Henry spoke to Manuel outside a café after he was sick. Manuel was taken by a man who said he was his father and Henry followed them and used his Bluetooth to make a 911 call to report Manuel's kidnapping but was cut off by a driver. Dave and Walter manage to make out the last numbers on the plate.

Walter manages to find the number plate on the video and the car is found. It belongs to another car and then he and Horatio notice the truck taking away another car. Inside is a bag with Manuel's plane ticket, a one-way flight from Nicaragua, as well as a laxative and a phone. Horatio realizes that Manuel is being used as a drug mule and they must find him before he's killed.

The tow truck driver, George Olsen, at first claims not to remember, then says the man had a tattoo and drove into a diner. Horatio finds Manuel, but the kidnapper takes Walter hostage and refuses to tell them anything; with Horatio in his threatening stance once again, the man relents and is arrested while Manuel is saved. Eric tells Olsen they managed to save Manuel and gives the name of a friend who can help Olsen find work, since he was laid off. Just then, Eric notices grease on Olsen's sleeve and realizes that he is the same driver who had gotten in Henry's way and Henry had reported him. Olsen was fired for his driving, followed Henry since he gave his name, took the boat out and killed him. Horatio tells Olsen he murdered someone he didn't even know. Olsen explains that Henry cost him everything. Eric tells Olsen that the MDPD doesn't resort to murder when people file complaints against them and take them to court. Olsen explains that most people file complaints anonymously, while Henry willingly left his name and phone number at the call center. Either way, Olsen is taken into custody.

Ryan catches Samantha looking at his bracelet and suggests they go for a drink as they close the case. However, her boyfriend Josh Avery arrives from the State Attorney's Office, and she suggests they go for a drink together. Ryan is clearly heartbroken.

Calleigh visits Sean and tells him about Olsen's arrest. Sean says he saw it on the news and that his father was murdered because Olsen was a bad driver, which he says is the punchline to a bad joke. Calleigh explains that while she understands that Henry was a stickler, tough and very difficult to live with, he noticed the little things, and he knew that if there was a little problem, chances are there could be a big one. Thanks to Henry, the MDPD had made very important arrests that day: Caldicott and Scherner for public endangerment, and the drug ring. It was through Henry that they saved Manuel's life, many other kids who would've been used as drug mules and the lives of people who would've lived on that land. This makes Sean realize his father was a hero.
